Sensory Nerve Fiber Composition Chart

Sensory_Nerve_Fibers_Composition

The above figure illustrates the composition of the typical sensory nerve. The Neurometer® CPT procedure is the only neurodiagnostic procedure that independently evaluates all three major subpopulations of sensory nerve fibers. It is important to evaluate these various subpopulations as different pathological conditions may selectively affect one of these subpopulations. By contrast, most other electrodiagnostic procedures evaluate less than 10% of the fibers. Clinical evaluations, such as the tuning fork or pin prick lack neuroselectivity and the subpopulation(s) of nerve fibers can mask the clinicians detection of the neuropathy impairing the functioning of other sub-population(s) of nerve fibers and lead to a false impression of normal sensory function. (Additional Information in the Neuroselectivity section of this link).
